HEX vs RGB Color Codes: A Simple Guide for Beginners

HEX and RGB often look like two different color systems, but for ordinary screen colors they are mostly two ways of writing the same red, green and blue values. Once you see the connection, converting between them becomes straightforward.

RGB uses three visible number ranges

RGB stands for red, green and blue. A common RGB color is written like rgb(34, 120, 210). Each channel usually ranges from 0 to 255. Zero means none of that color channel; 255 means its maximum value.

So rgb(255, 0, 0) is full red, while rgb(255, 255, 255) is white. When all three values are equal, you get a shade of gray.

HEX writes those values in base 16

A six-digit HEX color starts with # and contains three two-character pairs. For example, #2278D2 represents the same kind of red, green and blue channels, but each pair is written in hexadecimal rather than ordinary decimal.

The first pair is red, the second is green and the third is blue. Hexadecimal uses digits 0–9 plus letters A–F, which is why the code can look less obvious at first.

Why websites use both

CSS supports both HEX and RGB, so the choice is often about readability and workflow. Designers may copy HEX values from a palette, while developers may prefer RGB when they want to work with numeric channels or use alpha transparency in formats such as rgba().

The NexusNova RGB ↔ HEX Converter is useful when a design file gives you one format but your code or tool expects the other.

Short HEX codes

You may also see three-digit HEX values such as #fff or #09c. These are shorthand forms where each digit is repeated, so #fff expands to #ffffff. Short HEX works only when each pair contains the same character.

Uppercase or lowercase?

#FFAA00 and #ffaa00 represent the same color. Pick one style and stay consistent in your project. Consistency makes code easier to scan, even when it does not change the actual output.

Color values do not guarantee identical appearance

The same code can look slightly different across displays because monitors, brightness, color profiles and viewing conditions vary. A color code is precise data, but the physical screen still affects what your eyes see.

Do not forget contrast

Choosing a nice HEX value is only part of interface design. Text also needs enough contrast against its background to remain readable. A pale gray paragraph on a white page may technically be valid CSS but still be difficult for visitors to read.

A quick conversion workflow

  1. Copy the exact HEX or RGB value.
  2. Paste it into the converter.
  3. Check the converted value and color preview.
  4. Use the output in your CSS or design tool.
  5. Test the final text/background combination at normal screen brightness.

Bottom line — HEX vs RGB Color Codes

HEX and RGB are not competing ideas. They are two common notations for red, green and blue screen values. Use whichever format fits your workflow, convert when necessary, and spend more attention on consistency and readable contrast than on memorizing hexadecimal math.
