How to Check FBR ATL Status in Pakistan

Verify the correct Income Tax Active Taxpayer List record, understand CNIC and NTN lookup formats, and troubleshoot a missing or non-active result without guessing what it means.

Important: FBR is the authoritative source. Use this guide to understand the process, then confirm any result that affects a tax filing, bank transaction, property transfer or other formal decision on an official FBR channel.

What is the Income Tax ATL?

The Active Taxpayer List (ATL) is FBR's record used to show active income-tax taxpayer status. It is a status check, not a replacement for reading your return, payment record, notices or other tax obligations. Having an NTN does not by itself guarantee that the record currently shows “Active”.

Make sure you are checking the Income Tax ATL. FBR publishes a separate Sales Tax ATL, which is not the same list.

Method 1: Check online through FBR IRIS 2.0

  1. Open the official FBR IRIS 2.0 portal.
  2. Open Online Verifications and select Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax).
  3. Choose the identifier type that matches the record you are checking. The portal lists options such as CNIC, NTN, Passport No. and Reg/Inc. No.
  4. Enter the identifier in the selected format, complete the verification prompt shown by the official page, and submit the lookup.
  5. Read the returned status and note the date you checked it. If a result is unclear, confirm it through FBR before relying on it.

You can also start from FBR's official Active Taxpayer List guidance. The portal's available fields and instructions take priority over screenshots or third-party instructions.

Method 2: Check status by SMS

FBR's published instructions list these formats for the SMS status check:

  • Individual: send ATL [13-digit CNIC] to 9966.
  • Association of Persons (AOP) or company: send ATL [7-digit NTN] to 9966.

Use your own correct identifier and follow the current wording on FBR's page. Azad Jammu and Kashmir has a separate SMS prefix and identifier format, so do not reuse the general format for an AJK record without checking FBR's instructions. Your mobile operator may apply its usual SMS charges.

Method 3: Use the latest downloadable ATL

FBR also provides a downloadable Income Tax ATL. Open the official ATL download page and check the update date shown there before using a downloaded file. FBR specifically advises clearing browser cache and cookies if the download does not appear to be the latest version.

A saved spreadsheet or an old screenshot can become stale. For a current transaction, use the official online check or the most recent list available on FBR's site rather than assuming a file saved earlier is still current.

Why might the result say “Not Active” or return no result?

  • Wrong identifier type: a CNIC entered while NTN is selected, or a personal identifier used for a company record, can produce a mismatch.
  • Formatting or typing error: confirm every digit and make sure you selected the right record type. Do not post the complete identifier in a public screenshot to ask for help.
  • Return or late-filer requirements: check whether the relevant tax-year return was filed and whether any current late-filer requirement applies. Do not assume that submitting a return alone settles every ATL requirement.
  • Old downloaded data: re-check the update stamp and download the latest file directly from FBR.
  • Service or record issue: a timeout, changed FBR interface or unsuccessful lookup is not proof that a taxpayer is absent from ATL. Retry through the official portal and seek confirmation from FBR if the result matters.

How quickly does ATL status update after filing?

FBR announced amendments in October 2024 stating that the ATL would be updated daily instead of weekly. The same announcement says that late returns may still qualify for inclusion after payment of the applicable surcharge under section 182A. The applicable process can depend on the tax year and current rules, so this guide does not quote a surcharge amount or promise an exact update time.

If you have just filed a return and the status has not changed, verify the record on IRIS, check the current official ATL file, and review any applicable payment or compliance requirement. If the official sources conflict or the status affects a transaction, contact FBR rather than treating an online error as a final tax determination.

Frequently asked questions

Does having an NTN mean I am on the ATL?

No. An NTN identifies a taxpayer record; the Income Tax ATL check returns a separate status. Verify the status on the relevant record rather than inferring it from the number alone.

Can I use a passport or registration number?

The online FBR verification portal lists Passport No. and Reg/Inc. No. among its identifier options. SMS instructions are different and list specific CNIC or NTN formats. Follow the options actually shown by the official method you use.

Is this the same as checking Sales Tax ATL?

No. FBR publishes a separate Sales Tax ATL. Choose the list that matches the question you need to verify.

Can a third-party checker guarantee a tax result?

No. A third-party checker can help display an upstream response, but FBR's official portal and records are authoritative. If the check fails, treat it as an unsuccessful lookup until you confirm the status through FBR.

Protect your tax identifiers

CNIC, NTN and passport values are sensitive. Never share your IRIS password or one-time code with a checker. Use only the identifier needed for the selected lookup, avoid including full identifiers in screenshots, and use official FBR channels for confirmation.

Need to run a lookup? Use the NexusNova FBR ATL Status Checker as a convenience, or open official FBR IRIS 2.0 directly. NexusNova is not FBR and does not replace official confirmation.
