Understanding Tola, Masha, Ratti & Gold Karats (24K, 22K, 21K)
Gold prices in Pakistan are often quoted per tola, while jewellery may be weighed in tola, masha, or ratti. This calculator converts the entered weight into tola before estimating the metal value. Its conversion convention is 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti; therefore, 1 masha is 1/12 tola and 1 ratti is 1/96 tola. Confirm the unit and scale used by your jeweller before making a purchase.
Karat describes the proportion of gold in an alloy out of 24 parts. 24K is the reference for nearly pure gold; 22K contains 22 parts gold out of 24 (about 91.67%); 21K contains 21 parts (87.5%); and 18K contains 75%. Jewellery is alloyed for strength, so lower karat does not mean the item is automatically poor quality; it means the gold content differs.
How the estimate is calculated
Weight in tola = entered weight ÷ 12 for masha, ÷ 96 for ratti, or the entered weight for tola. Estimated gold value = rate per tola × converted weight × (karat ÷ 24). This formula assumes the rate you enter is a 24K reference rate. If your quoted rate already applies to the selected karat, do not apply a second purity adjustment.
Making charges are estimated here as a percentage of the calculated gold value: gold value × making-charge percentage ÷ 100. The total estimate is gold value plus those charges. Jewellers may instead charge a fixed labour amount, a per-gram rate, or additional wastage, stone, tax, or design fees. These are not included unless you account for them separately. Local rates change, and this calculator is a planning aid rather than a jeweller’s final invoice.
