Typing Speed Test
Measure words per minute and accuracy with a simple 30 or 60 second browser test.
Text to type
How WPM is calculated
This test uses the common convention of five typed characters as one word. Gross WPM is calculated from the number of characters you entered divided by five and adjusted to one minute.
How accuracy is calculated
Each typed character is compared with the character at the same position in the sample. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match. This makes the result easy to reproduce, but different typing websites may use slightly different scoring rules.
How to improve typing speed
- Prioritize accuracy before pushing speed.
- Keep your hands relaxed and use consistent finger placement.
- Practice short sessions regularly instead of one long session.
- Repeat tests with unfamiliar text, not only memorized passages.
Typing test FAQ
What is a good typing speed?
There is no single target for every job or learner. Compare your own results over time and aim for a balance of speed and accuracy.
Does NexusNova save my typed text?
No. The test runs in browser JavaScript and this page does not send the text you type to NexusNova.
How the typing test turns keystrokes into WPM
The test uses the standard five-characters-per-word convention for its WPM estimate. During a run, the number of characters typed is divided by five and then scaled to a one-minute rate using the elapsed time. Because the timer and browser input events operate in real time, very short attempts can be more sensitive to starting and stopping behavior than longer, steadier attempts.
Accuracy is calculated separately by comparing each typed character with the character at the same position in the sample text. A typo therefore affects the accuracy percentage even when the rest of the text is correct. The two numbers answer different questions: WPM describes typing rate, while accuracy describes how closely the entered text matches the supplied sample.
How to compare two test results fairly
Keep the keyboard, device, browser and test duration consistent when you are tracking improvement. Use unfamiliar text occasionally so memorizing a passage does not make a later score look artificially higher. A practical record can include the date, duration, WPM and accuracy. Looking at several sessions is more informative than treating the highest single score as your normal ability.
Why typing speed can change from one device to another
Keyboard layout, key travel, language familiarity, browser latency, display interaction and the exact sample text can all affect performance. A laptop keyboard can feel different from a mechanical desktop keyboard even when your typing skill has not changed. The test is therefore best used as a repeatable personal practice measure rather than as a universal certification of typing ability.
Troubleshooting a surprising result
- Restart the test if the timer was interrupted or the tab lost focus during setup.
- Use the same duration when comparing sessions.
- Check accuracy as well as WPM before deciding that one result is better.
- Repeat the test with a fresh passage when you suspect memorization.
- Do not compare scores from different websites without checking their WPM and accuracy rules.
