Thumbnail sizes and availability
YouTube commonly exposes several thumbnail renditions. Google's current Data API documentation lists 120×90 default, 320×180 medium, 480×360 high, 640×480 standard for some videos, and 1280×720 maxres for some videos. A maximum-resolution image is therefore not guaranteed for every video.
maxres rendition.Privacy and third-party requests
The URL is parsed in your browser and NexusNova does not need an API key. Thumbnail images are loaded from YouTube's image host, so your browser makes a request to that third-party service when previews are shown.
Copyright and fair use
A thumbnail can be copyrighted. Use images you own or have permission or another lawful basis to reuse. This utility only helps locate public thumbnail image URLs; it does not grant usage rights.
Thumbnail downloader FAQ
Does this tool download the video?
No. It only works with public thumbnail image URLs and does not download video or audio.
Why is Max Resolution missing?
Some videos do not have a maxresdefault.jpg thumbnail. Try the HD, SD or default option instead.

Method: resolve the video and request its thumbnail variants
The tool uses the YouTube video reference you provide to form thumbnail-image candidates for that video; it does not download the video itself. For example, a video may expose a standard thumbnail even when a maximum-resolution variant is unavailable. Thumbnail availability and image rights remain controlled by YouTube and the video's owner, so verify the chosen image and permission before reuse.
Choose a thumbnail size that fits the destination
Video thumbnail services can expose several image variants for a public YouTube video, but not every upload has every resolution. A maximum-resolution image may be absent or may return a smaller available variant. If an image is intended for a slide, a website card or a social post, open the candidate at full size and check its dimensions and sharpness before using it.
Step-by-step thumbnail workflow
- Copy the public video's URL or video ID from the address bar or the video's share option.
- Paste it into the converter and inspect the available thumbnail choices.
- Open or download the option whose size fits the page or presentation you are preparing.
- Verify the image itself, because a video may have a custom thumbnail, an unavailable asset or a different result than expected.
- Keep a note of the original video URL so you can trace the source later.
This is useful for organising a content calendar, preparing a draft slide deck, reviewing your own channel's thumbnails or creating a reference board. It does not download the video, bypass private-video permissions or grant permission to reuse someone else's artwork. Thumbnail images may be subject to copyright, trademark, publicity and platform rules. Ask for permission or use the asset only where you have an appropriate legal basis.
Privacy and availability limits
The tool uses publicly accessible thumbnail URLs for the supplied video identifier. The source service may see the request, and video privacy, age restrictions, deletion or regional availability can affect whether an image is returned. A valid thumbnail URL does not prove that the video is safe, still available or licensed for your planned use.
Thumbnail downloader questions
Why is the maximum-resolution option missing?
Not every video provides every image variant. Choose an available size and inspect its real dimensions.
Can I use every downloaded thumbnail commercially?
No. Download availability is not a reuse licence. Check ownership, permissions and the applicable platform rules.
