Freelance Invoice Payment Terms: Net 15, Net 30 and Better Cash Flow

Choose clearer invoice payment terms, reduce avoidable delays, and build a freelance billing process that is easier for clients to follow.

Why payment terms matter

A freelance invoice does two jobs: it asks for money and tells the client exactly how to pay it. Vague terms create unnecessary back-and-forth. Clear payment terms make the due date, accepted payment method, project reference and amount due obvious.

Net 15 means an invoice is due 15 days after the agreed starting point, usually the invoice date. Net 30 gives the client 30 days. Neither term is automatically better. The right choice depends on client procurement rules, project size, your cash reserves and how quickly you need working capital.

Practical workflow

  1. Put the invoice date and due date near the top.
  2. Name the project or purchase order clearly.
  3. State the payment method and currency.
  4. Repeat the amount due in a visually obvious summary.
  5. Keep late-payment language consistent with the contract and applicable law.
  6. Send a polite reminder before and after the due date.

Common structures

TermTypical use
Due on receiptSmall, fast-turnaround work
Net 15Short projects or trusted recurring clients
Net 30Common for established business clients
Milestone billingLarger projects where waiting for final delivery creates cash-flow risk

Track days-to-cash

A useful metric is days-to-cash = actual payment date − invoice date. Tracking it across clients shows which customers consistently pay late even when the written term is reasonable.

Example

A $3,000 project paid on Net 30 can still create stress if software, contractor and hosting costs are due every week. A 50/50 milestone arrangement can reduce that gap, provided the contract supports it. The objective is not aggressive collection. It is matching payment timing to the work and costs required to deliver.

Common questions

Is Net 30 mandatory?

No. Payment terms are contractual and should be agreed with the client before work begins.

Should the due date appear on every invoice?

Yes. A specific due date is clearer than relying only on a phrase such as Net 30.

What should I do when an invoice becomes overdue?

Follow the agreed reminder and escalation process, keep records, and stay consistent with the contract.
