Measure the trade, not just the price change

A stock position can move up in price and still earn less than expected after transaction costs. The share-level price difference is only one part of the result. This calculator combines share quantity, purchase price, sale price, buy-side and sell-side fees, and any dividend amount you enter. It then estimates the dollar profit or loss, return on total purchase cost and a break-even sale price per share.

Formula used by the calculator

Purchase cost = buy price × shares + buy fees. Net proceeds = sale price × shares − sell fees + dividends. The estimated result is net proceeds minus purchase cost. Return on cost is that result divided by purchase cost, multiplied by 100. The break-even price solves for a sale price where net proceeds cover the purchase amount and both fee inputs after accounting for dividends.

For a simple example, buying 15 shares at $145 creates $2,175 of share value before fees. Selling those shares at $162 creates $2,430 of gross proceeds. After entering fees and dividends, the calculator gives a more useful estimate than multiplying the price change alone. Use actual fees from the trade confirmation when available. If fees are charged per order rather than per share, enter the combined order fee for the position, not the fee repeated 15 times.

What this number does and does not mean

The result is a trade-level calculation before taxes. It does not determine your taxable basis under your jurisdiction's rules, calculate capital-gains tax, decide how to treat wash sales, apply foreign-exchange conversions, include margin interest or model bid-ask spread and slippage unless you include those costs yourself. Dividends are included as cash received for the entered position, but their tax treatment can differ from capital gains.

For multiple purchases at different prices, calculate the adjusted cost basis first or evaluate each tax lot separately. Do not assume a profit on one sale means the whole portfolio has the same return. A realized trade also differs from an unrealized gain in a position you still hold.
